This 12 day Fully Escorted Tour is operated by Kiwistyle Travel and takes you through New Zealand's North Island visiting all of the 'Must Do' destinations and taking part in all of the popular activities along the way. It provides the ultimate opportunity to view and experience the North Island to its fullest!

 

DAY 1 – ARRIVE AUCKLAND/NEW ZEALAND
On arrival today in Auckland you will be met at the airport and taken to the Harbour City Hotel located right in the heart of the city. You are less than 3 minutes stroll from the chic cafes and restaurants at the Viaduct Harbour and Princes Wharf as well as Queen Street – Auckland 's main shopping street.

This evening there will be a cocktail party in the hotel to meet your Tour Escort and receive a full briefing for your tour.

We have left tonight free for dinner as there are so many choices within short walking distance from the hotel.

Auckland , New Zealand 's largest population centre, is poised between two harbours and dotted with some fifty extinct volcanic cones. A cosmopolitan city, Auckland is also the largest Polynesian city in the world.

 


DAY 2 – AUCKLAND – BAY OF ISLANDS
Depart Auckland and drive north to the Bay of Islands . After checking in to your camp site your escort will take you in to town to explore and browse.

Paihia is an excellent base for exploring the Bay of Islands . Catch ferry to quaint historic Russell , once known as “The Hell-hole of the Pacific”, is the perfect place for strolling along the sea front promenade and exploring the old restored buildings - now cafes restaurants, and antique shops. Old Christ Church still bears the bullet holes from the early fighting between British soldiers and Maori Rebels.

On arrival you will join one of the top local adventures a cruise to the ‘hole in the rock' at the tip of Cape Brett . Paihia is also just down the road from the historic Waitangi Treaty House, which marks the beginning of New Zealand as a nation.

DAY 3 – BAY OF ISLANDS – HOKIANGA
Today you will depart for the Hokianga. Your journey takes you through farmlands past the restored historic Waimate Mission and church. You continue past Ngapha Springs, famous for the curative qualities of the thermal mud-baths there, through Kaikohe and to Rawene, a quaint little seaside pioneer village from the earliest European settlement in New Zealand . Then on to Opononi on the Hokianga. After checking in to your camp site your escort will take you around the area to explore and browse.

Opononi, Hokianga , White sand beaches stretch three miles from South Head to Opononi Wharf . The harbour scenery in the Hokianga is possibly the most beautiful in New Zealand . You may take a short ferry ride over to the giant sand dunes and perhaps try your hand at an exhilarating sand-board down the golden slopes.

Other activities include a “Crossings” sightseeing cruise of the harbour – The Hokianga is one of the most important historic regions of New Zealand to both Maori and European. The night tour of the kauri forest, operated by “Footprints Waipoua” is featured in the “Lonely Planet Green Book” as one of the 82 ‘must do' experiences of a lifetime.

DAY 4 – HOKIANGA – AUCKLAND
This morning depart Opononi and drive through the pretty Waimamaku Valley into the Waipoua Kauri Forest where you will stop to view the giant kauri tree, Tane Mahuta , “Lord of the Forest ”. Then on through Dargaville to Auckland . After checking in to your camp site your escort will take you in to town to explore and browse.

Perhaps catch up on some things you did not have the opportunity to see on the first visit. Your escort guide is always happy to help.

Waipou Forest, Hokianga , of all New Zealand 's forests, none is more famous than Waipoua Kauri Forest . This primeval forest is an ancient green world of huge trees and rare birds and is litte changed since dinosaurs roamed the earth. Importantly, it is the home of Tane Mahuta , the world's largest kauri tree, which is over 2000 years old. Nearly 18 metres to the first branch and 4.4 metres in diameter, Tane Mahuta is aptly known as 'The Lord of the Forest '.

DAY 5 – AUCKLAND – WAITOMO – ROTORUA
This morning depart Auckland and drive south along the Waikato River and passing through the rich Waikato dairy and Horse-stud farming area. On arrival at Waitomo Caves you will be taken on a guided tour of the world famous caves including a visit to the Cathedral Cavern; extraordinary for its sound quality and where such famous personalities as Dame Kiri Te Kanawa have performed. Then enjoy a silent subterranean boat ride on the underground river and see the fickering displays of glow-worms.

Leaving Waitomo you continue the journey to Rotorua. On arrival check in to your camp site and the rest of your day is free. This evening the group will picked up to attend the impressive award winning Tamaki Maori Cultural Show and Dining Experience – a traditional Maori hangi, cooked in underground oven.

Waitomo Caves , Waitomo Caves are famous for the subterranean phenomena.

Beneath the surface of this limestone region is a series of vast cave systems decorated with speleotherms (stalactites and stalagmites) and glow-worms.
Rotorua , with its unique volcanic landscape, the current and historical centre for Maori art and housing contemporary living Maori culture. Natural hot springs are found everywhere and there are numerous options for adventure - this region is second only to Queenstown for adventure attractions.

DAY 6 – ROTORUA
This morning you will visit Te Puia, New Zealand 's premier Maori Cultural & Geothermal visitor experience. Here, you will be able to explore attractions such as the Maori Arts and Crafts institute, the Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley , the Kiwi House or take in a Maori Cultural show.

This afternoon you will have free at leisure to explore Rotorua.

DAY 7 – ROTORUA – NAPIER
This morning you will depart the Rotorua camp site for the journey to Napier on Hawkes Bay. Your drive will take you past beautiful Lake Taupo , New Zealand 's largest lake formed by a gigantic volcanic eruption over 20,000 years ago. After checking in to your camp site your escort will take you in to town to explore and browse. Your escort guide will be happy to advise you and make any arrangements for you.

Napier , Disaster struck Napier in 1931 when it was almost completely levelled by an earthquake of 7.9 on the Richter Scale. The misfortune transformed the city in several ways; 9000 acres of land permanently lifted from the sea, but a more distinctive change was the style of rebuilding. The entire city was re-built by the government of the day in the then avante garde style – Art Deco. Napier is now the most complete art deco city in the world with one of the most outstanding collections of 1930s architecture in the world. Walking around the city, you'll see wonderful examples of Art Deco, Spanish Mission and Stripped Classical design.

Hawkes Bay , for travellers, Hawke's Bay Wine Country presents an eclectic mix of visual and sensual experiences. The region is New Zealand 's leading producer of red wines. The wineries here provide the opportunity to taste their wines and they couple this with their own fine food restaurants specialising in the best of local and New Zealand foods. The region is also home to the Cape Kidnappers Gannet Colony, the largest in New Zealand .

DAY 8 – NAPIER
Today you will have free at leisure to explore Napier and the surrounding Hawke's Bay region to explore the many attractions and activities it has to offer. The Tour guide/escort will be able to help you with anything you may wish to do today.

DAY 9 – NAPIER – WELLINGTON
This morning depart the Napier for the drive to Wellington . On the way you pass through lazy little Victorian towns and villages as well as the famous wine growing Wairarapa district. After checking in to your camp site your escort will take you in to town to explore and browse.

Wellington , is New Zealand 's capital city, and it's also known as our arts and culture capital. A special blend of heritage buildings, museums and galleries, fine food and live entertainment opportunities make this city a great place to visit in any season.

Journey Time: 4 Hours, 35 Minutes from Rotorua to Napier (stops will be made on the journey)

 

DAY 10 – WELLINGTON – TAUPO

This morning you will farewell your tour escort and begin your unescorted portion of your tour. You will depart your Wellington campsite for the journey to Taupo.

On arrival to Taupo you will settle into your Taupo camp site and enjoy the remainder of the afternoon and evening free at leisure.

Beautiful Lake Taupo is actually a huge volcano with a fiery history. Its most recent eruption, in 181 AD, was large enough to change the sky as far away as Europe and China . According to Maori legend, the lake is the pulsating heart of Maui's fish ( New Zealand 's North Island ).

The lakeside town of Taupo provides a base for visitors who love to fish for trout, ski Mount Ruapehu and explore the local geothermal phenomena. Popular Taupo experiences include Huka Falls , geothermal walks, a prawn farm, lake cruises and guided kayak expeditions to see the rock carvings at Mine Bay .

DAY 11 – TAUPO – AUCKLAND
This morning you will depart the Taupo camp site for the journey to Auckland .

On arrival to Auckland you will settle into your Auckland camp site and enjoy the remainder of the afternoon and evening free at leisure.

DAY 12 – AUCKLAND - END OF TOUR

Sadly today marks the end of your North Island tour. Today you will return your motorhome to the Auckland depot and join your flight for home.
