This 22 day Fully Escorted Tour is operated by Kiwistyle Travel and takes you through New Zealand visiting all of the 'Must Do' destinations and taking part in all of the popular activities along the way. It provides the ultimate opportunity to view and experience the New Zealand to its fullest!

 

DAY 1 – ARRIVE AUCKLAND/NEW ZEALAND
On arrival today in Auckland you will be met at the airport and taken to the Harbour City Hotel located right in the heart of the city. You are less than 3 minutes stroll from the chic cafes and restaurants at the Viaduct Harbour and Princes Wharf as well as Queen Street – Auckland 's main shopping street.

This evening there will be a cocktail party in the hotel to meet your Tour Escort and receive a full briefing for your tour.

We have left tonight free for dinner as there are so many choices within short walking distance from the hotel.

Auckland , New Zealand 's largest population centre, is poised between two harbours and dotted with some fifty extinct volcanic cones. A cosmopolitan city, Auckland is also the largest Polynesian city in the world

 



DAY 2 – AUCKLAND – BAY OF ISLANDS
Depart Auckland and drive north to the Bay of Islands . After checking in to your camp site your escort will take you in to town to explore and browse.

Paihia is an excellent base for exploring the Bay of Islands . Catch ferry to quaint historic Russell , once known as “The Hell-hole of the Pacific”, is the perfect place for strolling along the sea front promenade and exploring the old restored buildings - now cafes restaurants, and antique shops. Old Christ Church still bears the bullet holes from the early fighting between British soldiers and Maori Rebels.

On arrival you will join one of the top local adventures a cruise to the ‘hole in the rock' at the tip of Cape Brett . Paihia is also just down the road from the historic Waitangi Treaty House, which marks the beginning of New Zealand as a nation.

DAY 3 – BAY OF ISLANDS – HOKIANGA
Today you will depart for the Hokianga. Your journey takes you through farmlands past the restored historic Waimate Mission and church. You continue past Ngapha Springs, famous for the curative qualities of the thermal mud-baths there, through Kaikohe and to Rawene, a quaint little seaside pioneer village from the earliest European settlement in New Zealand . Then on to Opononi on the Hokianga. After checking in to your camp site your escort will take you around the area to explore and browse.


Opononi, Hokianga , White sand beaches stretch three miles from South Head to Opononi Wharf . The harbour scenery in the Hokianga is possibly the most beautiful in New Zealand . You may take a short ferry ride over to the giant sand dunes and perhaps try your hand at an exhilarating sand-board down the golden slopes.

Other activities include a “Crossings” sightseeing cruise of the harbour – The Hokianga is one of the most important historic regions of New Zealand to both Maori and European. DAY 4 – HOKIANGA – AUCKLAND
This morning depart Opononi and drive through the pretty Waimamaku Valley into the Waipoua Kauri Forest where you will stop to view the giant kauri tree, Tane Mahuta , “Lord of the Forest ”. Then on through Dargaville to Auckland . After checking in to your camp site your escort will take you in to town to explore and browse.

Perhaps catch up on some things you did not have the opportunity to see on the first visit. Your escort guide is always happy to help.

Waipou Forest, Hokianga , of all New Zealand 's forests, none is more famous than Waipoua Kauri Forest . This primeval forest is an ancient green world of huge trees and rare birds and is litte changed since dinosaurs roamed the earth. Importantly, it is the home of Tane Mahuta , the world's largest kauri tree, which is over 2000 years old. Nearly 18 metres to the first branch and 4.4 metres in diameter, Tane Mahuta is aptly known as 'The Lord of the Forest '.

DAY 5 – AUCKLAND – WAITOMO – ROTORUA
This morning depart Auckland and drive south along the Waikato River and passing through the rich Waikato dairy and Horse-stud farming area. On arrival at Waitomo Caves you will be taken on a guided tour of the world famous caves including a visit to the Cathedral Cavern; extraordinary for its sound quality and where such famous personalities as Dame Kiri Te Kanawa have performed. Then enjoy a silent subterranean boat ride on the underground river and see the fickering displays of glow-worms.

Leaving Waitomo you continue the journey to Rotorua. On arrival check in to your camp site and the rest of your day is free. This evening the group will picked up to attend the impressive award winning Tamaki Maori Cultural Show and Dining Experience – a traditional Maori hangi, cooked in underground oven.
Waitomo Caves , Waitomo Caves are famous for the subterranean phenomena.

Beneath the surface of this limestone region is a series of vast cave systems decorated with speleotherms (stalactites and stalagmites) and glow-worms.
Rotorua , with its unique volcanic landscape, the current and historical centre for Maori art and housing contemporary living Maori culture. Natural hot springs are found everywhere and there are numerous options for adventure - this region is second only to Queenstown for adventure attractions.

DAY 6 – ROTORUA
This morning you will visit Te Puia, New Zealand 's premier Maori Cultural & Geothermal visitor experience. Here, you will be able to explore attractions such as the Maori Arts and Crafts institute, the Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley , the Kiwi House or take in a Maori Cultural show.

This afternoon you will have free at leisure to explore Rotorua.

DAY 7 – ROTORUA – NAPIER
This morning you will depart the Rotorua camp site for the journey to Napier on Hawkes Bay. Your drive will take you past beautiful Lake Taupo , New Zealand 's largest lake formed by a gigantic volcanic eruption over 20,000 years ago. After checking in to your camp site your escort will take you in to town to explore and browse. Your escort guide will be happy to advise you and make any arrangements for you.

Napier , Disaster struck Napier in 1931 when it was almost completely levelled by an earthquake of 7.9 on the Richter Scale. The misfortune transformed the city in several ways; 9000 acres of land permanently lifted from the sea, but a more distinctive change was the style of rebuilding. The entire city was re-built by the government of the day in the then avante garde style – Art Deco. Napier is now the most complete art deco city in the world with one of the most outstanding collections of 1930s architecture in the world. Walking around the city, you'll see wonderful examples of Art Deco, Spanish Mission and Stripped Classical design.

Hawkes Bay , for travellers, Hawke's Bay Wine Country presents an eclectic mix of visual and sensual experiences. The region is New Zealand 's leading producer of red wines. The wineries here provide the opportunity to taste their wines and they couple this with their own fine food restaurants specialising in the best of local and New Zealand foods. The region is also home to the Cape Kidnappers Gannet Colony, the largest in New Zealand .

DAY 8 – NAPIER

DAY 9 – NAPIER – WELLINGTON
This morning depart the Napier for the drive to Wellington . On the way you pass through lazy little Victorian towns and villages as well as the famous wine growing Wairarapa district. After checking in to your camp site your escort will take you in to town to explore and browse.

Wellington , is New Zealand 's capital city, and it's also known as our arts and culture capital. A special blend of heritage buildings, museums and galleries, fine food and live entertainment opportunities make this city a great place to visit in any season.

DAY 10 – WELLINGTON – BLENHEIM
This morning you depart Wellington for the short journey to the Wellington ferry terminal. Here, you and your vehicle will board the ferry for the interisland journey from the North Island to Picton in the South Island . On arrival in Picton you will travel to the nearby Blenheim to your camp site and enjoy the remainder of the afternoon and evening free at leisure.

Blenheim , is situated in the heart of wine-growing Marlborough . It is one of the sunniest towns in New Zealand . Mountains frame the area and trap the summer heat. In and around Blenheim you'll find a pleasing selection of cafes, restaurants, bars, shops, artisan food outlets and golf courses. However, like Napier the character vineyards and their fine local food are not to be missed.

DAY 11 – BLENHEIM – GREYMOUTH
This morning depart the Blenheim and drive to the fruit-bowl of New Zealand , Nelson . Nelson is renowned for its sunshine and the local crafts people and artisans. From there the drive continues to Greymouth on the West Coast. After checking in to your camp site your escort will take you in to town to explore and browse.

Greymouth , once the site of the Maori pa Mawhera (which means ‘wide spread river mouth', in reference to the town's river mouth location), Greymouth is the largest town on the South Island 's west coast. The area has a history of gold mining, which can be appreciated at the local museum and nearby Shantytown – a reconstructed Victorian mining village. Perhaps try your hand panning for gold.

DAY 12 – GREYMOUTH – FRANZ JOSEFGLACIER
This morning depart the Greymouth camp site for the journey to the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers. Your trip takes you past rain forests and lakes with the Southern Alps towering on your left and the raging Tasman Sea on your right. After climbing into the mountains you arrive at the Glaciers and your camp site. Time to relax and explore before dinner.
Franz Josef Glacier , was first explored in 1865 by geologist Julius von Haast , who named it after the Austrian emperor. The glacier is five kilometres from the town of the same name, and a 20 minute walk will take you to its terminal face. From the glacier car park, you can hike to a choice of lookout points for a bigger view of this awesome river of rice. If you want to actually make contact with the glacier, take a guided ice walk or a heli-hike.

DAY 13 – FRANZ JOSEF GLACIER - WANAKA
Departing Franz Josef continue south past beautiful rugged coastal scenery before turning inland driving alongside the Haast River . Then climb through Haast Pass and travel to Mount Aspiring National Park past Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka to Wanaka itself. After checking in to your camp site your escort will take you in to town to explore and browse.

Wanaka, the lakeside town of Wanaka is an appealing mix of fine living, fun and adventure and the town abounds with cafes, restaurants and interesting shops. You won't have to go far here to discover their passion with vintage WW11 aircraft. Wanaka's annual air-show is one of the most famous in the world.

DAY 14 – WANAKA – QUEENSTOWN
Leaving Wanaka we drive past the town of Cromwell – moved to its present site t0 accommodate a hydroelectric dam which flooded the old town, and continue on for a short stop at quaint Clyde. Then on past Kawarau Bridge with its mighty bungy jumping platform to Queenstown. Settle in to you camp site and then take a look around this picturesque mountain lake resort.

There is truly too much to see and do here to begin to describe. Your tour escort knows it all and he will make certain you are organised to fit in your “must do's”. We do suggest the Walter Peak Dinner Cruise for a memorable Queenstown experience.

Queenstown , the first people to discover Queenstown's rare beauty were Maori pounamu (jade) hunters. Then came the gold miners, in search of another kind of treasure. Today Queenstown is treasured for its magnificent scenery, adventure opportunities and luxury lifestyle.

DAY 15 – QUEENSTOWN – MILFORD SOUND – QUEENSTOWN
This morning you will board a 5 Star tour coach for fabulous Milford Sound. Drive along the lake's edge with the towering Alps all around before traversing picturesque farmlands. You again reach the mountains and enter Milford through the Homer Tunnel . Descending into Milford sound you are surrounded by hundreds of waterfalls cascading from the towering mountains. On Milford Sound you will enjoy a breathtaking cruise through scenery unsurpassed in the world. Later your coach returns via Te Anau to Queenstown. This evening is free to enjoy as you wish. Milford Sound, described by Rudyard Kipling as the 'eighth wonder of the world', Milford Sound was carved by glaciers during successive ice ages. At its deepest point, off Mitre Peak , it plunges to a depth of 265 metres. Wet or fine, Milford Sound is breathtaking. The fiord's sides rise vertically from the dark waters, mountain peaks scrape the sky and waterfalls cascade down precipitous cliffs.

DAY 17 – QUEENSTOWN – DUNEDIN
Depart Queenstown and drive through the inland towns of Alexandra and Roxburgh past lakes rivers and magnificent mountain scenery to Dunedin . After reaching your camp site you will have time to explore and get to know this early New Zealand city and your escort will accompany those who wish to familiarise themselves with the town.

Dunedin , was built with the revenue from the gold rush of the 1800s, consequently there is no other city in the southern hemisphere as rich in Edwardian and Victorian architecture. Gothic church spires, ornate mansions, swathes of native forest and magnificent views of the harbour make Dunedin very memorable.

DAY 18 – DUNEDIN

DAY 19 – DUNEDIN – MOUNT COOK
Travelling northwards, pause at Moeraki Beach and view the 60 million year old boulders and then north through Oamaru, famous for its old limestone buildings. We then turn inland and travel past the hydro-electric lakes of Benmore and Aviemore, then on through Omarama to Mount Cook . After settling in at the camp site you may wish to take an optional scenic flight over this awe-inspiring alpine region (weather permitting, own expense) and land on the mighty Tasman Glacier.

Mount Cook or by the Maori name, Aoraki, meaning “cloud piercer”. At 12,316 feet, Mount Cook is the highest mountain in Australasia .

Journey Time: 4 Hours, 44 Minutes from Dunedin to Mt Cook . (stops will be made on the journey).

 

DAY 20 – MOUNT COOK - CHRISTCHURCH
After taking the opportunity to view Mt Cook from the Hermitage, drive north past the glacier fed Lake Tekapo and stop to view the tiny Church of the Good Shepherd, built in 1935 of locally gathered stone and oak. Then leaving the high country, cross the sweeping Canterbury plains to Christchurch . Your escort guide will be happy to advise you and make any arrangements for you.

Christchurch , the ‘Garden City' is described as being more English than England . The South Island 's largest city, it is an entertaining mixture of refined lifestyle and cultural excitement.
